Do you currently run or plan to develop a WordPress site for your race? Ever wondered what WordPress plugins most race websites use for things like race maps, setting up merchandise stores and race calendars?
Well, we did. So we collected data from 8,449 WordPress race websites to see what plugins people choose for each part of their website. And here are the results:
Most popular plugin for Forms
Contact Form 7
Used by: 2,689 websites (31.8% of all race websites)
Contact Form 7 is the most widely used contact form plugin for WordPress, so it’s hardly surprising it’s the top choice for race website contact forms, surveys and anything else that may require collecting user data.
Runner Up: Gravity Forms
Most popular plugin for Merchandise Stores
Used by: 790 websites (9.4% of all race websites)
WooCommerce is one of only a handful of plugins developed by WordPress’ own team (Jetpack is another) and it your top choice if you’re thinking of launching a race merchandise store. It easy to set up as is and can be extended in any number of ways through additional extension plugins.
Most popular plugin for Website Tools
Used by: 1,035 websites (12.3% of all race websites)
WordPress, the creators of Jetpack, describe it as “the ultimate toolkit for WordPress” – and they’re not far off the mark. Jetpack combines a huge number of tools in one plugin: image and load speed optimisation tools, social sharing tools, SEO tools, enhanced website security, mobile phone admin access…the list really is endless. So no wonder so many race websites use it.
Most popular plugin for Race Calendars
The Events Calendar
Used by: 370 websites (4.4% of all race websites)
If you’re hosting multiple races or events on a single website (or want to host a race calendar for events in your area), you may want to put everything on a nice neat race calendar. The Events Calendar is the most widely adopted event calendar plugin and almost half of the race website installations have gone the extra mile with the premium Events Calendar Pro version.
Runner Up: All-in-One Event Calendar
Most popular plugin for Embedded Race Maps
WP GPX Maps
Used by: 88 websites (1.0% of all race websites)
Only about 1% of WordPress race websites use a dedicated mapping plugin – probably because most course mapping tools already offer decent website embedding options. For those that do, WP GPX Maps seems to be the go-to plugin, offering a variety of mapping options and an interactive elevation chart.
Most popular plugin for Image Sliders
Used by: 1,444 websites (17.1% of all race websites)
More than 25% of race websites use image sliders and, with 17% of all websites, Slider Revolution tops the list. If you’re after the wow factor with a responsive plugin that doesn’t cripple your website, this is the plugin for you.
Runner Up: LayerSlider
Most popular plugin for Photo Galleries
Most popular plugin for Social Media
Custom Facebook Feed/Instagram Feed
Used by: 812 websites (6.9% of all race websites)
Embedded social media feeds were all the rage a couple of years ago and many websites still use them to inject a bit of social media buzz on the homepage. Facebook feeds are popular, but Instagram feeds are catching up – and in both cases the plugins from Smash Balloon are the most widely adopted by race websites.
Most popular plugin for Caching
Used by: 92 websites (1.1% of all race websites)
WP Rocket topped the list of most popular dedicated caching plugins. Not surprising as it seems to be the most widely adopted WordPress caching plugin out there. So, if it’s website performance and faster load times you’re after, WP Rocket’s the plugin for you.
Other popular plugins
When it comes to looking at nearly 9,000 websites, we found different plugins being used for different reasons. And some of the more popular choices were tools that are quire universally adopted by all kinds of WordPress websites.
You may know some but may be in need of others. So here’s a list of the most popular tools we came across:
- Tablepress Create neat tables for your WordPress pages and posts.
- Mailchimp for WordPress Help visitors subscribe to your Mailchimp mailing list from your website.
- Google Analytics for WordPress Popular WordPress integration for Google Analytics. If you’re comfortable using Google Analytics we suggest you don’t install this as it may drag down your site’s speed a bit.
- T Countdown Widget Need a race countdown clock? We found this to be the most popular with race websites.
- Q Translate X The most popular choice we encountered for turning your race website multilingual.
