Last weekend the iconic Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon took place for the 41st time in San Francisco, California. Some of the world's best triathletes compete each year at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Racers start their ‘escape’ by jumping off the San Francisco Belle at Alcatraz Island and swimming 1.5 miles to the San Francisco shoreline. Then follows an 18-mile hilly bike ride out to Golden Gate Park and an 8-mile trail run out to Baker Beach and up the infamous Sand Ladder.

This world-renowned triathlon, in which only 2,000 triathletes can participate, sells out quickly each year. Athletes can register through the random drawing, as a professional athlete, as part of a partner charity, or qualify by placing on top of the podium in their age group the previous year.

The timing setup at the race was quite extensive with multiple splits along the course and in transition between disciplines and a variety of active decoders, loop boxes and track boxes used for live timing and tracking of all athletes.  Live tracking was available via the Escape Alcatraz Triathlon app developed by RTRT.me. Top honors for the individuals went to Eric Lagerstrom and Jackie Hering, who finished in 2:01:36 and 2:15:22 respectively.

“RACE RESULT technology was efficient to deploy at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.  The flexibility of Decoders, Loop Boxes and Track Boxes along the course allowed us to find the best solution specific for each timing point” says Scott Langford with Trinity Timing. “Having Loop Boxes store the timing data on the transponder and using Track Boxes on the bike and run courses for extra tracking splits was a game changer for us this year in the hard-to-reach spots along the course.  RACE RESULT has been at the forefront of timing technology innovation, and we can’t wait to see what they come out with next."
